Martin Nievera sings “Stairway To Heaven” theme

May 18, 2005

Hi guys!

Here goes…

=======

Martin Sings Koreanovela Theme

After the successful run of Stairway to Heaven on primetime television, the Koreanovela is expected to dominate the local music chart with the release of its original soundtrack (OST) under Galaxy Records in cooperation with CAPS.

The OST is worth the buy for two reasons. First, it comes in double disc containing the beautiful melodies of the telenovela. Second, it features a bonus track, Hanggang Langit, recorded by Martin Nievera. The ditty is the Filipino adaptation of the Koreanovela theme song composed by Vehnee Saturno.

Hanggang Langit reunites Martin with Vehnee. In the ’80’s, Martin’s ticket to music stardom was via Vehnee’s work, Be My Lady that became a monster hit after it won the grand prize in the Metro Pop Music Festival.

Hanggang Langit was launched on simultaneous broadcast last May 9, in the folowing radio stations nationwide: YES FM in Metro Manila 101.1 and Davao, Love Radio in Metro Manila 90.7, Bacolod 91.9, Iloilo 97.5, Cebu 97.9, Baguio, Dagupan, Naga and Legaspi, Star FM in Metro Manila 97.9, Baguio 89.5, Dagupan 100.7, Naga 90.3, Bacolod 95.5, Legaspi 103.5, I-FM in Metro Manila 93.9, Cebu 93.9, Davao, Home Radio in Metro Manila 93.9, Cebu 106.7, Energy FM in Metro Manila 91.5, Cebu 94.7 and Davao, Hot FM Cebu 91.5, Wild FM in Cebu 103.5, Campus Radio in Bacolod 107.1, Z 100 FM in Iloilo 100.7, Radio One in Iloilo 88.7 and Wow FM in Davao City. This is the first time in the recording business that a song was launched in a simultaneous nationwide broadcast.

Bogoshipda was originally sung by Kim Bum Soo.

All About Kenneth

May 17, 2005

To all fans of Kenneth of All About Eve, this article is for you!

Jang Dong Gun

We all know the handsome gentleman in All About Eve named Kenneth, who’s in love with Nicole (played by Chae Rim), who in turn is the mortal enemy of Erica (played by the hottie actress/model Kim So Yun), who in turn dumped Warren (played by Han Jae Suk).

He’s Jang Dong Gun, one of Korea’s talented matinee idols. He was born on March 7, 1972 in Seoul. He studied in Han-Gook School of Arts, majoring in Drama. But due to his busy schedule in his acting career, he quitted school in his third year. He started his acting career in 1992.

Jang Dong Gun

Since then, he has starred in many movies and TV dramas. His latest movie is The Promise (2005). (I think it’s also shown here in the Philippines? Parang nakita ko na ito eh. I’ll verify…) His TV dramas include All About Eve (2000) and Myth of A Hero (1997). He received many awards in acting, such as:

1994 - Baek-Sang Arts Award: TV Drama New Actor Award

1997 - Baek-Sang Arts Award: Popularity Award

1997 - MBC-TV Best Actor Award

1997 - Chung-Ryong Movie Festival: New Actor Award with Pae-Ja-Bu-Hwal-Jun

1999 - Chung-Ryong Movie Festival: Supporting Actor Award with In-Jung-Sa-Jung-Bol-Gut-Up-Da (”Take Nothing into Consideration”).

His hobby is singing. In fact, he sang in Episode 14 of All About Eve, entitled I Will Give You All. (But unfortunately, it was not included in the show’s OST.) He also plays basketball and ice hockey.

More pictures in my gallery. I’ll add more of his pictures soon! :)

“Salamat Sayo Nanay” lyrics

May 9, 2005

I’m sure you still remember the laundry soap commercial with the twin girls dancing while singing the jingle. Ang cute nila noh? :P The jingle is entitled Salamat Sayo Nanay. May lyrics ako nun! :D

Heto na ang lyrics ng song:

====

Salamat Sayo Nanay

(Stanza)

Paggising sa umaga

Handa na’ng almusal sa mesa

Habang siya ay namamalansta

Ng uniporme sa eskwela.

Nabutas na ang medyas

Ang polo’y di kumupas.

(Chorus)

Naluma na ang cellphone

Maong man ay may gasgas.

Nang dahil kay nanay

Sa husay niyang magsampay

Buhay ay nagkaroon ng kulay.

Salamat sayo nanay.

====

Pag may time ako, lalagyan ko yan ng guitar chords, para masaya! :D

Pinoy dispels proof of Fermat’s theorem

May 5, 2005

Back in the old days when I was still a Math competitor in high school, I recall that the unprovable Fermat’s Last Theorem was finally proven by British mathematician Andrew Wiles. Andrew Wiles claimed in 1993 that he was able to prove Fermat’s theorem. This announcement made history in the field of mathematics.

Or is it?

In April 2005, a Pinoy professor was able to prove that Wiles’ proof is wrong. And Wiles himself conceded!

In 1637, the French mathematician Pierre De Fermat stated that, for any nonzero counting numbers x, y, z, and n, there are no numbers x, y, and z that can satisfy the equation xn + yn = zn if n is greater than 2. If n = 1, then the equation reduces to x + y = z, which is of course a piece of cake. (For example, the variables x, y, and z can be 3, 5, and 8 respectively. In this case, x + y = z becomes 3 + 5 = 8, which is true. There are an infinite number of solutions when n = 1). For n = 2, the equation reduces to x2 + y2 = z2, which is also known as the Pythagorean Theorem. There are also many sets of x, y, and z that can satisfy this problem, like x = 3, y = 4 and z = 5. (In this case, x2 + y2 = z2 becomes 32 + 42 = 52, which reduces to 9 + 16 = 25.) The problem is when n is greater than 2, to which Fermat stated that there is no solution for this case.

Fermat also stated that he found the proof for his statement. But his proof somehow mysteriously disappeared. Other mathematicians attempted to prove Fermat’s theorem, but unfortunately to no avail. In fact, this theorem went unproven for more than 300 years!

Enter Andrew Wiles. In 1993, Wiles published a 150-page document containing his proof on Fermat’s theorem. Mathematicians worldwide celebrated this momentous historic event. At last, someone has been able to prove Fermat’s theorem! From that moment on, even Math quiz bees give trivia questions like “Who is the mathematician who proved Fermat’s Last Theorem?”

Unfortunately, it has now been proven very recently that Wiles’ proof is incorrect. And it was proven by a Pinoy!

He is Edgar Escultura, a University of the Philippines math professor. In 1998, he published his formal refutation that challenged Wiles’ proof. Escultura blamed the axioms of the real number system for being defective, which is one of the reasons why Fermat’s theorem cannot be proved. In particular, Escultura said that the following two axioms are false:

* Trichotomy axiom: If x and y are two real numbers, then only one of the following is true: a) x > y, b) x = y, and c) x < y.

* Completeness axiom: Any nonempty set of real numbers has a least upper bound. (In “layman’s speak”, there is always a real number between any two real numbers. It’s the axiom that is used to prove, among others, that the square root of 2 exists, and that calculus is possible.)

That’s what I call “shaking the foundations of mathematics”. ;-)

Literally, Escultura reconstructed the real number system using only three out of twelve axioms.

Then on April 26 2005, after a series of exchanges of letters between Escultura and Wiles, Wiles finally conceded and admitted that his own proof is wrong. Wiles even invited Escultura to collaborate in this mathematical endeavor!

I’m personally proud of Edgar Escultura. Great mind, great Filipino. :-)

See also Escultura’s story in The Manila Times.

Song Hye Kyo was in the Philippines

Yup, nakapunta na si Song Hye Kyo dito sa Pilipinas. (Song Hye Kyo is Jenny of Endless Love 1: Autumn in My Heart and Jessie of Full House).

Nagpunta siya sa isang beach dito sa Pilipinas (Boracay? Palawan?) one year before Endless Love 1 was shown for the first time here.

Heto ang mga pictures niya while she was in the Philippines. Try nyong hanapin siya sa pics. Good luck! :-D

Update: Song Hye Kyo, together with the rest of the Korean people in the pics, are casts of the Korean series All In. In the second pic, Lee Byung Hun, Song Hye Kyo’s former boyfriend, is the one in blue polo and white shorts. Park Sol Mi is the girl in red shirt and white shorts. Thanks for the info, Gina! :-)

Update: It’s very likely that Song Hye Kyo and company went to Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal Island near Davao City. (Thanks to Krissy for correcting me. :) )
